Tamim Appointed to Major ICC Role, to Lead ‘Big Three’ Officials

Tamim Iqbal, President of the BCB, has been appointed to a significant role within the ICC. The legendary cricketer has been named Chairman of a committee. From now on, in addition to his duties at BCB, the former Bangladesh captain will also lead the ICC’s Franchise Leagues Committee. Under his leadership, top officials from the world’s three most influential cricket boards—India, Australia, and England—will work.

The ICC itself announced Tamim’s appointment to this major responsibility. Franchise leagues are currently dominating global cricket, but the increasing number of these leagues poses a risk to international cricket and raises concerns about player welfare. The ICC’s Franchise Leagues Committee, with Tamim as its chairman, will work on addressing these comprehensive issues.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah is also part of this committee led by Tamim. Additionally, the committee includes Dr. Rudi van Vuuren from Cricket Namibia, Richard Gould, Chief Executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board, and Todd Greenberg, Chief Executive of Cricket Australia.

Meanwhile, decisions regarding the membership status of Canada, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and France were also made at the ICC meeting. Regarding Bangladesh, the organization stated, ‘The newly elected President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board has been recognized by the ICC Board as a Full Member Director of the organization.’

However, there is bad news for Sri Lanka. The ICC has urged the Sri Lankan board to quickly establish an elected committee, stating that Sri Lanka Cricket will temporarily not be able to represent itself at ICC Board meetings. Furthermore, France Cricket has been put ‘on notice’ due to violating ICC membership criteria. Conditions have been set for the reinstatement of Canada’s membership, whose suspension remains in effect.

Additionally, the ICC has decided to provide financial assistance of USD 12.82 million, or more than BDT 150 crore, to the financially struggling West Indies.

In addition to the Franchise Leagues Committee led by Tamim, another committee, the Governance Review Committee, has been formed. This committee does not have a chairman; its members include Jay Shah, Dr. Mohammed Moosajee of Cricket South Africa, and Dr. Ross Priyaz, an independent director of the ICC.
