The government has decided to grant normal retirement or retrospective promotion to 150 retired, removed, discharged, and dismissed officers of the Bangladesh Army, Navy, and Air Force. At the same time, it has also been decided to provide them with outstanding salaries, allowances, and other financial benefits.
This information was disclosed in a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Defence on Wednesday (July 1). The notification, signed by Defence Secretary Md. Ashraful Uddin, instructs that the order be implemented immediately.
The notification states that this decision has been taken after reviewing the applications of officers who faced deprivation, injustice, and vengeance in their service lives during the period from 2009 to August 4, 2024.
Among the 150 officers benefiting from this decision, 115 are from the Army, 21 from the Navy, and 14 from the Air Force. For most officers, mandatory or early retirement has been revoked, and their service has been extended until they reach the full age limit, effectively showing them as having taken normal retirement. Additionally, many have been given retrospective promotions to the ranks of Lieutenant General, Major General, Brigadier General, and Colonel.
Consequently, the concerned officers will receive outstanding salaries and allowances according to their service tenure in the promoted rank and other financial benefits as per rules.
The notification mentions that some officers are also being granted special financial benefits. Special financial incentives have been set, ranging from BDT 30 lakh for some, BDT 50 lakh for others, and up to BDT 1 crore for certain individuals. Furthermore, opportunities for plots or flats under government or force management, as per existing policies, and appointments in government or autonomous institutions based on age and qualifications, have been made available.
Among the beneficiaries is Major General (Retd.) Syed Fatemi Ahmed Rumi, former Director General of the Special Security Force (SSF). He was sent on compulsory retirement on March 12, 2009. According to the new decision, his retirement has been revised and will be considered normal retirement as of August 25, 2013. Consequently, he will receive outstanding salaries, allowances, and other benefits at the rank of Major General from 2009 to 2013.
Also on the list is Brigadier General (Retd.) Abdullahil Aman Azmi. He was compulsorily retired on June 24, 2009. Under the new decision, he has been retrospectively promoted to Major General on December 26, 2011, and to Lieutenant General on December 26, 2014. He will receive outstanding salaries, other financial benefits, a special incentive of BDT 1 crore, and the opportunity for appointment in a government or autonomous institution.
Additionally, the compulsory retirement of Lieutenant General (Retd.) Aminul Karim, former military secretary to former President Iajuddin Ahmed, has also been revised. Although he was retired on March 12, 2009, according to the new decision, his retirement will be considered normal as of June 30, 2012. As a result, he will receive outstanding salaries, allowances, and other benefits for that period.
The Ministry of Defence stated that this decision was made after reviewing the recommendations of a high-level committee formed on May 3 of the current year and the opinions of the headquarters of the three forces.
