Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed announced that Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members have been instructed to remain alert at the borders regarding the “push-in” issue. However, he believes the likelihood of such a situation arising is low.
He made these remarks while speaking to journalists after the District Administrator’s Conference held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital on Wednesday (May 6).
In response to a journalist’s question, the Home Minister stated that the government is closely monitoring the issue in the context of the BJP’s victory in the West Bengal elections in India and statements made by some leaders before the elections about “pushing in” Muslims into Bangladesh. He said, “Yesterday, we instructed the BGB to remain alert at the borders. Although I believe nothing of the sort will happen, they should be prepared to handle any situation if it arises.”
In response to another question, he informed that instructions have been given to verify thousands of cases filed during the interim government’s tenure and provide information within one month. Murder cases filed against journalists will also be included in this verification process.
He also mentioned that there was a discussion regarding the withdrawal of so-called ‘ghost cases’ (cases filed without apparent victims or complainants) filed during the Awami League government’s term.
The Home Minister also highlighted special measures being taken to reduce traffic congestion and public suffering in the capital during the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha. He stated that no cattle markets would be allowed to be set up alongside highways or railway lines. Additionally, special machines would be installed in cattle markets to detect counterfeit currency.
He further added that police body-worn cameras would be used and constant surveillance would be maintained in large cattle markets to enhance security.
