Scaloni Names World Cup Favorite, Omitting Argentina

Ahead of their 2026 World Cup Round of 16 clash against Cape Verde, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni offered his assessment of potential title contenders during a press conference. In his view, France has been the most consistent team in the tournament so far. However, he also considers Brazil, Spain, Colombia, and Mexico to be strong contenders for the trophy. This news comes from TYC Sports.

Scaloni stated, “At this moment, France is playing the best football for me. Brazil is also doing great. Mexico’s performance against Ecuador was outstanding. Colombia is playing well, and Spain is always strong. However, France’s consistency particularly stands out.”

Regarding the knockout stage battles, he remarked that almost every match has been equally competitive. In his words, “Except for the match between France and Mexico, almost all other matches have been fiercely contested. From here on, every match will be tough.”

**Scaloni Not Underestimating Cape Verde**

The Argentina coach is certainly not seeing Cape Verde, who have reached the Round of 16 in their first-ever World Cup appearance, as an easy opponent.

He said, “They are still undefeated. They deserved to win against Saudi Arabia as well. The team is very organized in defense, blocking opponents’ passing lanes and launching quick counter-attacks. They have several technically very skilled footballers. They are not here by luck.”

Scaloni further added, “We are in good shape, but there is no room for error now. This is a match where a loss means the end of our World Cup campaign. So, we must play with utmost respect for the opponent.”

Regarding the large presence of Argentine supporters in Miami, he commented, “Our supporters have always provided extra energy. This is not pressure, but rather inspiration. Their support will boost our confidence in tough matches.”

**Concern Over Hot Weather**

Scaloni also expressed concern about the match-time conditions in Miami, where temperatures are expected to be around 32 degrees Celsius, with a possibility of rain, which could further increase humidity.

He stated, “The match could have been organized at night. This issue is not just for Argentina but for both teams. I am complaining about the quality of the match. Playing in the intense afternoon heat naturally affects the standard of football.”
